The Sentimental Stuff

Updated: Apr 20, 2021

One of the most common questions posed to me as an organizer is,

"How Do I Part With The Sentimental Stuff?"

My first answer is always, "You don't". Items symbolize and recall amazing memories of people you love. This Pennsylvania Dutch hex sign hung in my Grandma Rita's "utility room", which was the first space you entered in her home. It was always warm and filled with amazing smells and where our toys were located. You will have to pry it from my cold, dead hands before I ever give it away because it represents everything about her I cherish and love.

However, there are some guidelines to help you part with items when the psychological toll outweighs the sentimental benefit.

Here are a few questions to ask:

  1. Does this item really capture my most important memories of that loved one?

  2. Who else besides me would possibly want this item when I am gone?

  3. Does this item bring back positive or negative memories?

  4. Can this item be put on display and enjoyed (mine is in my laundry room and I see it daily)?

  5. Is keeping this relic of the past preventing me from living my best life today?

Once you ponder those difficult questions, then do the following to help declutter.

  1. Create a shelf, space, or ONE BIN of items to keep and get rid of the rest.

  2. Take a photo of the item to cherish it and then donate it.

  3. Use it, don't store it. If you are keeping dishes, use them instead of putting them in a box.

  4. Research collector and antique and Facebook groups who would appreciate and value the items as opposed to them going to waste in your basement.

  5. Envision how BETTER that storage space could be used and emotionally how much better you might feel after dealing with it once and for all.
